The most difficult thing about writing a book for me is clarity.  I wanted to be concise, but sometimes I wondered if I said enough or left something out that was really important.  I didn’t start out with the intention of even writing an epilogue because, well, who reads those things anyway?  But I felt it necessary for my own conscience to pull it together in an unfragmented sort of way as I intended it to come out.

Mission, or doing anything good for God, and what Jesus was driving at in Revelation 2 can be summed up in one word: Response.  Our heart has a response to the love that has been received from God.  In the overflow of our heart, something happens.  You know what that is?

Several years ago, I was coerced into going with a group of guys to a men’s retreat in Hot Springs, Arkansas.  My friend Steve had instituted this sort of Mecca for a number of guys around our church.  I talked to a few of the guys who’d been going for years about what it was like, and they all gave me raving reviews about the experience.  I have to admit they were pretty convincing, and the brochure was a fairly slick marketing piece that had a man’s hands breaking free of chains.  I knew there were a few things I needed helping dealing with, so maybe this would be worth it.

As a favor to people, I always discreetly tell them if they have some obstruction like sleep in their eye, lipstick on their teeth, food in their beard, etc.  In my opinion, it should be a common courtesy.

My friend Bobby and I were talking one day, and he told me how it is amazing the amount of money, time, and preparation that’s expended to put together a wedding – a single day, a single event that no one usually remembers and that may last a sum total of 6 hours including the reception (those are the really good Catholic ones of course!).  He went on to say that in comparison for the preparation for the actual marriage – the lifelong commitment – there is hardly any thought or discussion.

Until recently, I’d never come to appreciate the Old Testament.  I pretty much assumed that it was just obsolete and there wasn’t much to glean from it.  I think the majority of Christians feel the same way.

As much as I’ve changed over the past several years in my thoughts about God, life, and the Bible, it still amazes me the number of things that I’ve never sat down and challenged and thought through.  Take, for instance, Bible stories. Growing up in church, I heard every one about a million times.  I would even correct the teacher from time to time.

I find it’s easy for Christians to get caught up in the things that take the place of intimacy with God: doing good, taking care of family, church activities, even spiritual disciplines. They all can give people the impression that everything is okay with ourselves and God. When inside, we know we couldn’t be more distant than we are from Him.
